Music Vision Statement

“Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” Plato

The curriculum at Our Lady of Lourdes is engaging, ambitious and inspires our pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians.  They have opportunities to learn about music in all its forms; to listen and appreciate music, to compose and perform and to understand the specialist aspects of it – its language, its patterns and its notation. Our curriculum develops students’ awareness and understanding of music from a variety of styles, periods and cultures.  We encourage active involvement in creating and developing musical ideas whilst nurturing a sense of group identity and togetherness.  We view music as a universal language that allows our children to develop creativity, resilience, confidence and to foster a sense of achievement.

Music Intent Statement

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence
  • understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated, including through the inter-related dimensions: pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations.
